Things to do in Kilkenny

St Canice’s cathedral and Round tower. It is an essential part of Kilkenny tourism and shows the heritage of the vibrant medial city that was and still is Kilkenny. The round tower is the oldest standing structure in Kilkenny and tourists can enjoy climbing the round tower whilst looking out the window and taking in the vibrant surroundings. This tower is one of only two towers that permit Tourists to climb. The Cathedral itself is used for national concerts and events, for example the Kilkenny Arts Festival, which is held every August. This is the perfect tourist attraction as you will be able to witness the spiritual, cultural, architectural and archaeological wonder of Kilkenny.

Visitor entrance times and Rates:

Opening Times – April, May & September – Monday – Saturday: 10am – 1pm & 2pm – 5pm | Sunday: 2pm – 5pm

June, July & August – Monday – Saturday: 9am – 6pm | Sunday: 1pm – 6pm

October – March – Monday – Saturday: 10am -1pm & 2pm -4pm | Sunday: 2pm – 4pm

We advise people to arrive at the Cathedral/Tower at least 1/2 an hour before closing to avoid disappointment. Combination and Family Tickets;

A combination ticket for an adult covers entry to the cathedral and round tower. A family ticket covers entry to the cathedral and round tower for two adults and up to three children aged over 12 and under 18.

Please ring ahead to arrange combined entry to the cathedral and round tower for groups. Family ticket includes entry to round tower and cathedral for 2 adults and up to 3 children between 12-18 years old. Under 12’s are not admitted to the Round Tower.

Round Tower

No under 12’s are permitted to climb the round tower. The tower will be open depending on weather conditions and staffing. The tower is open at 12noon and 3pm Monday to Saturday and 3pm Sunday between October and March. May-September the opening times are in conjunction with the Cathedral opening times. Last climb 30 minutes before Cathedral closes. Please ring ahead to confirm.

No parking available at Cathedral so allow time for parking on Dean St or in city centre car parks.

Smithwick’s Experience

This is the perfect tour for a fan of this beer or fan of how beer is made in general as well as the history.  The factory opens daily and on some occasions opens in the evenings were you as a tourist can craft your own evening.  This includes a VIP tour, tasting opportunities as well as some personalized gifts to take home to remember the experience.

The normal day tours teach you the history of the beer, how it was discovered, who created it and how the brew was perfected over generations. With fully trained tour guides you get to experience the full blown history of the ale and the new inventions of ale it has created over the years for example, Pale Ale, Long Summer Ale as well as the original.

Ballybur Castle

This is the perfect place for any tourist to stay during their visit to Kilkenny, not only is it a self-catering Holiday home it is also a 6th century towerhouse restored to its former glory. From the beautiful doors surrounding the entrances and exits to the kitchen and dining areas each room is a master piece in its own right. There are no shortages of activities to do once in the castle for example there is 8 golf courses in Kilkenny, locations and opportunities to go horse-riding and many more. The culture in Kilkenny is a great activity as well and in Ballybur Castle you have access to all these different cultural activities.

There is a housekeeper who visits the castle twice a week to empty the bins and to do such duties as bed making, laundering and cleaning however if you require these services from her she must be paid separately.

National Craft Gallery

Looking for some cultural excitement when in Kilkenny? Than the National craft gallery is perfect! Every month there is a different exhibition which showcases the different artistic people in Ireland, as well as these exhibitions they also hve an education and outreach part of the gallery which includes talks with the curators, family fun days and masterclasses. This is the perfect thing to do in Ireland whether you come with a group of family of friends. The different educational things that are on in the gallery will teach you new things about the world of art and will hopefully spark an artist in you! The gallery was once a castle but has been modified for the new use but whilst in the gallery you can still enjoy a lovely walk in the castle yard and find out other things to do in Kilkenny whilst you are there.

Countryside Leisure Activity Centre

The perfect way to enjoy a day is in the countryside leisure activity centre where you can enjoy a whole range of activities. Whether you have ever done these activities before or not should not stop you from trying new things and when visiting Kilkenny this is the place to visit to try new and exciting activities such as Archery, Claypigeon shooting and  Airsoft target shooting. Perfect for a single, couple or even a group of friends 2+. The are open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Sunday and it is a 10 minute drive from  Bonnettsrath City Centre.
